Siegfried H. Glenzer

A Stanford professor and SLAC division director whose work connects inertial fusion, high-power lasers, and matter under extreme conditions.

Siegfried H. Glenzer

Biography.

Siegfried Glenzer is Professor of Photon Science and, by courtesy, of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. He directs the High Energy Density Science Division at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, where he built a program that combines high-power lasers with the Linac Coherent Light Source X-ray beam.

Before joining SLAC in 2013, he spent 12 years as Plasma Physics Group Leader at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and led the first inertial confinement fusion experiments on the National Ignition Facility.

His honors include the Ernest O. Lawrence Award from the United States Department of Energy, the American Physical Society Award for Excellence in Plasma Physics Research, and a 2024 Fulbright award. His work brings together fusion evidence, laser systems, research strategy, and the transition from experimental performance to commercial systems.
